Headshot Central: 3 steps to achieve a scroll-stopping portrait

For many who are uncomfortable in front of a camera, a headshot can be a necessary evil. Having a compelling professional portrait is important, but how do you make the most of your headshot session?

Jody Autumn is an Oklahoma City-based photographer who has shot hundreds of headshots. Here are her three tips to keep in mind for your shoot:

1. Plan

Simply think about where you will be using these photos and what you want them to say. Your photographer needs to know how you’re using the images so they can consider that for size and composition, but also know if you’re going for something playful or serious.

2.  Prepare

Instead of stressing about outfit changes, opt instead to add a jacket or accessory for a slightly different look. You want to look yourself, but it never hurts to splurge on professional makeup and hair service. A blowout (we prefer Drybar) is an instant confidence boost. Don’t forget to drink lots of water leading up to that day for your freshest skin!

3. Pose

“What do I do with my hands!?” is always a huge concern. But a good photographer will guide you the entire time. Most important: chin in front of your belly button! No matter if you are standing or sitting, chin in front of the belly button. It may feel a little funny at first but when you follow this tip, it elongates your neck and makes your face the focus the headshot.
