Get ready for a confidence boost.

There are defining moments in your work life. One of mine came when I was working for a state agency. I loved the work but hated the workplace. I was getting to write super fun content about things I found interesting. It was a writer's dream because I had an audience that loved the work. It was so fulfilling to have hundreds of thousands of people were reading what I wrote every month. But the commute, the windowless cubicle and the inconsiderate coworkers were killing me. 

I finally worked up the courage to ask my boss for the solution I knew would make me more productive and inspired: working from home. When she said "no" all the confidence I had in myself and my work disappeared and with it went the fulfillment.

Thankfully, I had a cheerleader at home (my husband) who saw that I was capable. He was the one voice saying that if I was good at my job I should be able to do it whenever and however I wanted. He very generously opened a safety net and told me to quit. He was so certain I would find a job that could be fulfilling and flexible.

All the thoughts came:

• My boss just said I can't work from home. Who else would possibly hire me?

• I'm lucky to have this job. I can't just leave.

• My boss is probably right. Without someone looking over my shoulder I probably won't be able to meet deadlines.

• Who did I think I was thinking I could have the self-discipline to work outside an office?

Long story short, I quit on a Thursday and started a dreamy work-from-home job with a better title and better pay just two weeks later.
