I've got a bone to pick with 40 Under 40 lists
In a former life, I was a journalist. I worked for a newspaper and a couple magazines and once or twice a year, these publications would publish their "power" or "top" lists. Although most are advertising, they're presented more like editorial, which was extremely frustrating to me.
Over and over, I saw a sales team put together a list of women based on whose company might be able to afford a big, fat ad or buy out an expensive table at a corresponding gala. They then invite those women to be "honored" with a mention in the issue.
Frustrating for anyone with journalistic integrity, the lists really got under my skin for more reasons as I got older. I wondered:
What if women open these publications and feel less than because they don't understand the monetary motivations behind them?
And then:
Why can't anyone just put together a list based on women's character instead of who will shell out the cash to be featured?
I waited. But time was ticking and nobody else was putting together the list. So I decided to create it.
Hundred Magazine features 100 incredible Oklahoma City women. Different ages, backgrounds, experiences. United by their outstanding character.
Their social status, title or education level were not considered in the making of this list. They're included because they're simply faithful with the work right in front of them, whatever that may be.
I took all the resources and manpower I have at The Treasury, got insanely generous support from DecisionGrid, Valliance Bank and Fleske Commercial Group and we made this magazine happen.
